The band’s extremely loyal fans were so excited about the prospect of this album that the band managed to raise over R1 million via a crowdfunding campaign to cover the album’s production costs. In the current tough economic times, this is a testament to what can be achieved when a band stays true to themselves and has built up a loyal following. From the outset, the Fokofpolisiekar mission was to release Selfmedikasie 100% independently and free from any investors or record label interference. Selfmedikasie was entirely self-funded, self-produced and recorded at Fokofpolisiekar’s guitarist, Johnny de Ridder’s studio in Cape Town’s northern suburbs. The design work is done by one of the bands closest friends, the artists Marchand. Selfmedikasie – Listen to what ‘the voice of a generation’ has to say now. The name of this 13-track album refers to a lyric and a song’s title. In Hunter Kennedy’s words: “I think the meaning is layered – the abuse of substances, the role music plays in our lives as catharsis and the human’s obsession with getting better.’’ The album’s cover is an Ourobus. Hunter explains that it “represents the eternal cycle of self-destruction and rebirth. To me, it means that you must take responsibility for yourself. The lyrics are very personal and was a form of self-medication to me and I believe for the other members as well.”
