A hundred years after the Russian Revolution, travel broadcaster and writer Simon Reeve embarks on an epic journey around the world s biggest country, Russia. In this three-part series Simon unlocks the beauty and variety of this vast but little travelled country, facing some of the most extreme conditions in the world as his travels take him from the Far East to the cities of the west. He meets an extraordinary range of characters humanising a nation usually viewed through the bleak prism of cold war hostility. Simon starts his journey 4,000 miles away from Moscow in Kamchatka, one of Russia s remotest regions and experiences experience what it is like to film in Putin s Russia as the Russian authorities take close interest in their activities. Travelling to Russia s far south west and the majestic Caucasus Mountain, he visits Dagestan, a largely Muslim region that has been scarred by jihadist violence. He meets security forces who use highly trained dogs to tackle the terrorist threat, and villagers attempting to keep their ancient tightrope-walking traditions alive. In his last leg he travels to the illegally annexed peninsula of Crimea where water supplies cut off by Ukraine are beginning to threaten a humanitarian crisis before reaching his final destination, the historic Baltic city of St Petersburg. With his trade mark insight and light touch Simon asks just what the next hundred years might bring for Russia and its relationship with the rest of the world.
