Description

Another star laden, accessible, feel good jazz record is Human Nature by BWB. BWB is the supergroup comprised of trumpeter Rick Braun, saxophonist Kirk Whalum and guitarist Norman Brown. For their second collaboration (first was 2002’s “Groovin” on Warner Brothers) the group has chosen to cover the music of The King of Pop, Michael Jackson. The track listing reads like a greatest hits compilation with selections from the Jackson Five, “Off the Wall”, “Thriller” and “Bad”. In addition to the title cut, tracks include “Billie Jean”, “Beat It”, “I’ll Be There” and “Man in the Mirror” to name a few. Though Braun, Whalum and Brown are often labeled as “smooth jazz” artists, the tracks on Human Nature demonstrate that this recording was produced in the tradition of modern jazz musicians interpreting popular music, like Ahmad Jamal did with “Poinciana” and John Coltrane did with “My Favorite Things.” Thing back to when Miles Davis covered Jackson’s “Human Nature”.
